Studio portrait of 5652 Lance Corporal (LCpl) Arthur Frederick James Payne, 18th Battalion, of Ulmarra, Clarence River, NSW. LCpl Payne had spent three years in cadets and two years in the 12th Infantry (CMF) before enlisting in March 1916, and left Australia in September 1916 with the 15th Reinforcement group for service on the Western Front. He sustained wounds in the face and neck during the 18th Battalion's attack on Poelcappelle on Passchendaele Ridge on 8 October 1917, and died the following day at the 10th Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek.
