Description
Studio portrait of 3216 Private (Pte) Michael Patrick O'Loughlin, 45th Battalion, of Grenfell, NSW. A farmer before enlisting in September 1916, Pte O'Loughlin left Australia with the 8th Reinforcements in November 1916 for service on the Western Front. He was in a support trench known as Garter Point, near Polygon Wood, on 28 September 1917 when a German shell killed him instantly, age 24. He was buried nearby. However, the small cross marking his grave was lost, and Pte O'Loughlin's remains were never recovered.
