Description

Studio portrait of 3616 Sergeant (Sgt) Arthur Smith, 53rd Battalion, of Marrickville, NSW. A warehouseman who had served in the Citizens Military Forces (CMF) before enlisting in September 1915, Sgt Smith left Australia for Egypt with the 8th Reinforcements of the 17th Battalion in December 1915. He was transferred to the 53rd Battalion as part of the 'doubling-up' of the AIF in April 1916, and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in June 1916. Sgt Smith was on a working party in the support lines at Anzac Ridge, near Zonnebeke on 20 October 1917, when he was killed instantly by a German 'whiz-bang' shell, age 22. He was buried nearby, but the cross which marked his grave was lost, and his remains were never recovered.
