Informal portrait of 1815 Private (Pte) Alexander Croal, 19th Battalion, of Newtown, NSW. A Scotish-born migrant with pre-war service with the Citizens Military Forces (CMF) before enlisting in May 1915, Pte Croal left Australia for Egypt with the 2nd Reinforcements in June 1915. After four months on Gallipoli, Pte Croal was hospitalised with jaundice but later contracted pulmonary tuberculosis whilst in hospital at Helopolis. He was repatriated back to Australia in January 1916, but died at the 4th General Hospital at Randwick on 14 July 1916, age 38.
