Cropped studio portrait of 975 Private (Pte) William James Patrick Quinn, 20th Battalion, of ...
Cropped studio portrait of 975 Private (Pte) William James Patrick Quinn, 20th Battalion, of Singleton, NSW, which features on a stylised print of journalist Keith Murdoch's account of the Australian attack on Bullecourt. A railway shunter before enlisting in March 1915, Sgt Quinn left Australia for Egypt with the original 20th Battalion in June 1915. Transferred to the 5th Machine Gun Company, Pte Quinn arrived in France for service on the Western Front in March 1916, and was promoted to Sergeant (Sgt) in January 1917. Sgt Quinn was killed when a German shell landed near his gun-team just as they arrived at the German positions during the second attack on Bullecourt on 3 May 1917, age 32. His body remained in the German trenches when the unit withdrew, and he has no known grave.
