Description
Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Benno Carl Lehmann, 3rd Machine Gun Company (3rd MGC), of Maitland, SA. A marine engineer prior to enlistment, Lt Lehmann embarked from Fremantle with the 11th Battalion aboard HMAT Miltiades on 12 February 1916. While serving in France with the 3rd MGC, Lt Lehmann was awarded the Military Cross on 16 August 1917 for "conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty." On 21 September 1917, Lt Lehmann was killed in action in Belgium, aged 37.
