Outdoor portrait of 1812 Corporal Alfred Ernest Grindrod, 20th Battalion, of Sydney, NSW. Prior to enlistment on 25 May 1915, he was employed as a hairdresser. He embarked as a Private with his battalion aboard the HMAT Kanowna (A61) on 19 June 1915, from Sydney, NSW. Private Grindrod was killed in action on 1 August, 1916 at the Somme, France. He is buried at the (267) Gordon Dump Cemetery Ovillers-La-Boiselle, France.
