Studio portrait of 2421 Private (Pte) William Magnus Stewart, 44th Battalion,of Pingelly, WA. A farm labourer before enlisting in May 1916, Pte Stewart left Australia for service on the Western Front with the 4th Reinforcement group in October 1916. He was killed instantly by a German sniper at Messines on 8 June 1917, age 40. He was buried where he fell in an unmarked grave, and its exact location was lost.
