Description
Informal portrait of four members of the crew of HMAS Sydney in front of one of the ship's gun mounts: Able Seaman (AB) PA1679 Douglas James Burrowes (back row, right) of Stepney, SA; 22831 Able Seaman (AB) Robert Underdown Ewens, (front row, left), of Millswood, SA; and two unidentified sailors. AB Burrowes enlisted on 29 November 1939, and joined the crew of HMAS Sydney on 30 January 1940. AB Ewens enlisted in the Navy on 6 February 1939, and joined the crew of HMAS Sydney on 18 April 1940. Both men were killed in action on 20 November 1941, when HMAS Sydney sank with the loss of all its crew, following the battle with the German raider Kormoran.
