Description
Pre-war studio portrait of 850 Private (Pte) Thomas Lee, 1st Battalion, of Tamworth, NSW. A British migrant from Sussex with twelve years service in the British Royal Marines Light Infantry, Pte Lee emigrated to Australia in 1912 to work as a railway plate-layer in Tamworth. Enlisting in August 1914, Pte Lee left Australia for Egypt with the original 1st Battalion in October 1914, and landed at Gallipoli in May 1915. He spent three months on Gallipoli before being listed as missing between the 5th and 11th August 1915. A board of inquiry later determined that Pte Lee had been killed in action at Lone Pine, age 34, and has no known grave.
