Studio portrait of 1308 Private (Pte) James Gristy Barker, 59th Battalion, of Melbourne, Vic. Pte Barker was a lamplighter in Birmingham, England, and then a storeman in Melbourne, before enlisting on 6 Octoer 1914. He embarked from Melbourne with the 2nd Reinforcements, 7th Battalion, on HMAT Clan McGillivray on 2 February 1915. After service on Gallipoli, he was transferred to 59th Battalion on 24 February 1916. He was killed in action on 19 July 1916 in France, at the age of 39.
