Studio portrait of 421222 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Leonard Alfred Jackson, RAAF, 14 Squadron ...
Studio portrait of 421222 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Leonard Alfred Jackson, RAAF, 14 Squadron RAF. On the night of 18 April 1945, Flt Lt Jackson was serving as navigator onboard Wellington NC.419 which was undertaking a U boat patrol off the south coast of England. According to an accident report issued soon after, a distress signal stating that the aircraft had a fuel leak was received at Royal Air Force Station St Eval, Cornwall, before the aircraft crashed into a cliff face at nearby Trenance village soon after midnight. A letter from 14 Squadron Leader, Wing Commander E. Donovan DFC, to Jackson's widow, Bernice Gwen Jackson, states that Flt Lt Jackson's "work as a navigator has been exceptional and he was a most efficient Squadron Navigation Officer, steady and reliable in a tight spot and always so cheerful and helping to everybody, he was one of Squadron's most popular officers".
