Studio portrait of 3310 Private (Pte) Ivor Bevan Rhys, 5th Pioneer Battalion, of Fremantle, WA. Captain of Perth Modern School in 1915, Rhys won a scholarship to study mathematics and physics at the Western Australian University before enlisting in August 1916. He was promoted to Corporal (Cpl) in November 1916, and left Australia for France with the 8th Reinforcements the following month. Cpl Rhys was killed at the 5th Division camp at Blangy-Tronville when it was heavily shelled by German artillery on 17 April 1918, age 21.
