Studio portrait of 2616 Private (Pte) William Edgar Cockman, 51st Battalion, of Waneroo, WA. Employed as a gardener before enlisting in August 1915, William Cockman was the youngest of four brothers who enlisted for service during the First World War. He left Australia for the Middle East with the 6th Reinforcements in November 1915, and arrived in France in June 1916. Admitted for shellshock after the 51st Battalion's attack on Mouquet Farm in August 1916, he was listed as missing after the battalion's second attack on the heavily defended German position two weeks later. Despite attempts by the Red Cross to locate Pte Cockman, a court of inquiry later determined that he had been killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 3 September 1916, age 24.
