2402 Driver Alfred John Stone Lord, a 38 year old electrician from Sydney, New South Wales, enlisted in the AIF on 2 September 1915. After initial training Lord was assigned to the 1st Light Horse Regiment, 16th reinforcements and sailed for Egypt on 12 May 1916 aboard HMAT A25 Anglo Egyptian. Lord joined his unit in Palestine on 19 August, shortly after the Battle of Romani. He was appointed a driver for the regiment's transport wagons in November 1916, supporting them at Maghdaba and Rafa. Lord was then transferred at the end of January 1917, again as a driver, to 1 Field Squadron Engineers, attached to the Anzac Mounted Division. Lord spent the last half of 1917 in Egypt either in hospital or in convalescence camps, with a variety of medical problems. In June 1918 he transferred to 2 Field Company Engineers. He saw no further active service after September when, after suffering a series of abscesses, and a persistent cough, he was repatriated to Australia as a result of his debility, leaving Egypt in March 1919 aboard HMAT Euripides.
