Studio portrait of 4565 Private Stanley Algernon Richard Banks, 48th Battalion, of Rye Park, NSW. A labourer before enlisting in September 1915, Pte Banks left Australia for Egypt with the 14th Reinforcements of the 16th Battalion in February 1916. Transferred to the 48th Battalion in April 1916 as part of the 'doubling-up' of the AIF, Pte Banks spend four months with the Battalion in France before he was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 31 August 1916, age 25.
