Studio portrait of 418968 Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Herbert Reuben Mann, RAAF, 104 Squadron RAF. The son of Herbert Turner Mann and Clara Alice Mann, Flt Sgt Mann was born in Haworth, Yorkshire and emigrated with his family to Geelong, Victoria in 1924. In 1935, Herbert Mann married Mary Emma Gibbs; they had two sons, Douglas and Graham. A textile worker in Preston, Victoria at the time of enlistment in December 1941, Flt Sgt Mann studied Astro Navigation at Cootamundra, NSW before embarking for England via America aboard USSAT Willard A Holbrook on 6 May 1943. Following operational training in England, he was posted to 104 Squadron RAF based at Foggia, Italy. Flt Sgt Mann and the crew of his Wellington bomber LN 760 (D for Donald) were killed on operations over Italy on 19 July 1944, and are buried at Bari War Cemetery.
