Studio portrait of 2708 Sergeant John Atherton, 22 Squadron RAAF, of Wollongong, NSW. Sgt Atherton enlisted at Richmond, NSW, on 8 March 1937. He was one of 23 Australian and American personnel who were killed on 27 March 1943, when a Douglas C46 Dakota aircraft of 36 Squadron, A30-16, crashed shortly after taking off from Archerfield airfield, Qld, on a transport flight from Brisbane to Sydney.
