Description
Studio portrait of 2085 Private (Pte) Robert James Heathcote, 38th Battalion, of Wentworth, NSW. Pte Heathcote, a station hand before enlisting on 11 April 1916, embarked from Melbourne on 25 September 1916 on HMAT Shropshire with the 3rd Reinforcements. He was killed in action on 7 June 1917 at Messines. He was 20 years old. His younger brother, 2329 Gilbert William Heathcote, enlisted on the same day as him and served in the same regiment. Gilbert Heathcote was killed in action at Paschendale on 13 October 1917. On the back of the photograph, a relative has written the following verse:
Just as his life was brightest
Just as his hopes were best
There came the call of duty
And he responded with the rest.
