Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) George William Allen (Bill) Langford, HMAS Parramatta, of Melbourne, Vic. The son of Commander George Francis Langford, who served in the First World War, Lt Langford enlisted on 1 January 1926 at the age of 14, as a Cadet Midshipman at the RAN College. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 16 September 1936, and joined the crew of HMAS Parramatta on 4 June 1940. He was killed in action on 27 November 1941, when HMAS Paramatta was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine while escorting a convoy delivering supplies to Tobruk.
