Studio portrait of 162 Private (Pte) Charles James Lee, 12th Battalion, of Longford, Tasmania. With three years service with the 93rd Infantry, Citizens Military Forces (CMF) before enlisting on 20 August 1914, Pte Lee left Australia for Egypt in October 1914. Having landed at Gallipoli as part of the first wave attack on 25 April 1915, Pte Lee was promoted to Corporal (Cpl) in July, and wounded in the right thigh during the attack on Lone Pine on 7 August 1915. He was evacuated to the hospital ship HMHS Sicilia, but died of wounds seven days later, aged 20, and was buried at sea.
