Description

Informal group portrait of S4681 Stoker (Sto) William Alfred Baker and his family and friends prior to departure upon HMAS Sydney. A printer from Balmain, Stoker Baker enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy on 11 October 1940 and served at naval bases HMAS Rushcutter in Sydney and HMAS Cerberus in Victoria before joining HMAS Sydney following its return to Australia from the Mediterranean in February 1941. He was killed in action on 20 November 1941, when HMAS Sydney sank with the loss of all its crew, following the battle with the German raider Kormoran. Identified in the image, left to right; unidentified; Stoker Baker’s mother, Pearl Hazel Mavis Baker; Stoker Baker; Avice Joyce Storm; father Edward Warrington Baker and an unidentified aunt. The children are unidentified. The tents in the background have been erected in front of the oil terminal to accommodate guards who protected it.
