Portrait of VX22751 Corporal (Cpl) Arthur Vernon Gottschutzke, 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion, of Sea Lake, Victoria. When the Japanese invaded Java in February 1942, Cpl Gottschutzke was among 865 officers and men of the 2/2nd that survived the fighting and were taken Prisoner of War (POW). On 21 July 1943, Cpl Gottschutzke died of illness, aged 27, while working on the Thai-Burma railway.
