Studio portrait of 888 Private (Pte) David Harold Ellem, 15th Battalion, of Casino, NSW. A farmer prior to enlisting on 23 September 1914, Pte Ellem embarked from Melbourne on 22 December 1914 with F Company on HMAT Ceramic. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 1 May 1915 at the age of 19. He was one of six brothers who enlisted; another brother, 642 Sergeant Boyd Alexander Ellem, was killed in action in France on 19 September 1918.
