Outdoor portrait of a group of 12 unidentified soldiers, probably of the 10th Battalion at a unknown camp, probably in France. Three in the group are wearing Australian slouch hats and four are wearing Australian Rising Sun collar badges. Two pet dogs are held in the front row. This photograph is amongst a collection by 3103 Private (Pte) Frederick Steinle, 10th Battalion, from Streaky Bay, South Australia who is believed to be standing on the far left. Pte Steinle enlisted at the age of 21 on 17 June 1915 and embarked for overseas on 14 September 1915 aboard HMAT Ballarat. He was wounded and captured at Pozieres, France, on 22 August 1916 and held as a Prisoner of War (POW) in a number of camps in Germany including Munster in Westphalia, Stendal, Wittenberg and Merseburg. Pte Steinle was repatriated to England on 1 January 1919 and arrived back in Australia on 5 June 1919.
