Studio portrait of four British Prisoners of War (POW) in an unidentified POW camp in Germany. The handwritten note on the face of the photograph reads “The four nuts from Sussex, Herts, Kent and Nottingham. Tpr J.L King H.B., Ptes Nottage R.F., Bligh E.H. and Taylor L.F.” One of the POWs is possibly 9656 Private Edwin H. Bligh, East Kent Regiment. This photograph is amongst a collection by 3103 Private (Pte) Frederick Steinle, 10th Battalion, from Streaky Bay, South Australia who enlisted at the age of 21 on 17 June 1915 and embarked for overseas on 14 September 1915 aboard HMAT Ballarat. He was wounded and captured at Pozieres, France, on 22 August 1916 and held as a Prisoner of War (POW) in a number of camps in Germany including Munster in Westphalia, Stendal, Wittenberg and Merseburg. Pte Steinle was repatriated to England on 1 January 1919 and arrived back in Australia on 5 June 1919.
