Description

A postcard of the Prisoner of War (POW) camp at Merseburg, Germany. This is most likely a propaganda postcard produced as a series from this camp. This card was kept as a souvenir by 3103 Private (Pte) Frederick Steinle, 10th Battalion from Streaky Bay, South Australia who enlisted at the age of 21 on 17 June 1915 and embarked for overseas on 14 September 1915 aboard HMAT Ballarat. He was wounded and captured at Pozieres, France, on 22 August 1916 and held as a Prisoner of War (POW) in a number of camps in Germany including Munster in Westphalia, Stendal, Wittenberg and Merseburg. Pte Steinle was repatriated to England on 1 January 1919 and arrived back in Australia on 5 June 1919.
