Description

Studio portrait of 5428 Private (Pte) William Horace Stanton, 24th Battalion, of Kensington, Vic, with his wife Alethea and son Leslie. A varnish maker before enlisting in April 1916, Pte Stanton left Australia for France with the 14th Reinforcements in August 1916. Seeking shelter from a German artillery barrage before the Second Battle of Bullecourt on 4 May 1917, Pte Stanton had just arrived at the entrance of a recently captured German dugout when a German shell landed at the entrance, killing him instantly, aged 25. Despite attempts by the Red Cross to determine what had happened to Pte Stanton, no details about his burial could be determined, and he subsequently has no known grave.
