Description
Pre-war studio portrait of 1629 Trooper (Tpr) Osborne William Johnston, 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment from Delungra, NSW. A 28 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 17 August 1915, Tpr Johnston left Australia for Egypt with the 12th Reinforcements from Sydney on 9 November 1915. After serving along the Suez Canal and in the Sinai, he was killed in action at Khuweilfe, Palestine, on 3 November 1917, aged 30. Tpr Johnston is buried at the Beersheba War Cemetery, Palestine (present day Israel). Tpr Johnston's younger brother, 4315 Private Cyril Donald Johnston, 54th Battalion, was killed in action at Fromelles, France on 20 July 1916, aged 24, and is buried in the Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery.
