Mounted and signed formal group portrait showing 14 senior officers of the Citizen Forces with the former British Army officer, Colonel (Col) Hubert Foster (1855-1919), at the University of Sydney. Col Foster (Royal Engineers) saw service in the Egyptian War of 1882 and had been quartermaster general of the Canadian Military Forces during the South African War. In 1906 he accepted the newly created appointment of Director of Military Science at the university. He lectured there and in addition conducted special courses for officers of the Australian Military Forces, many of whom would go on to hold senior commands and staff appointments during the First World War. The officers in this portrait attended a course of instruction in Staff Duties held between 11 to 23 October 1909.
