Description

Studio portrait of 1700 Private (Pte) Leslie James Fackrell of Port Melbourne, Vic who enlisted on 22 February 1916. Pte Fackrell embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Euripides (A14) on 4 April 1916 with a group of general reinforcements bound for Egypt. When he arrived in Egypt he was assigned to the 60th Battalion and on 18 June 1916 he embarked from Alexandria with his battalion on board SS Kinfauns Castle bound for Marseilles. His battalion was involved in the action at Fromelles and on 19 July 1916 he was reported missing. A Court of Enquiry convened on 4 August 1917 changed this status to killed in action. A number of Australian soldiers were captured at Fromelles and in 1919 a former prisoner was interviewed to ascertain if Pte Fackrell was captured. Pte Fackrell has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Memorial in the VC Corner Cemetery, France.
