Studio portrait of S/5399 Ordinary Seaman (OD) Frederick Francis Smith, HMAS Cerberus (later HMAS Armidale), of Brighton Le Sands, NSW. OD Smith enlisted on 26 January 1942 and underwent training at HMAS Cerberus, before joining the crew of HMAS Armidale on 11 June 1942. HMAS Armidale was sunk by Japanese aircraft on 1 December 1942. OD Smith died of the wounds he sustained during the attack, while at sea in one of the ship's boats, on 2 December 1942. He was 24 years old.
