Studio portrait of 123 Lance Corporal (later Sergeant) Albert Roy Harbeck, 39th Battalion, of Lakes Entrance, Vic. A farmer prior to enlistment, Private Harbeck embarked with A Company from Melbourne on HMAT Ascanius on 27 May 1916. On 1 May 1917 Sergeant (Sgt) Harbeck died of wounds in Ploegsteert, Belgium, aged 24. Two of Sgt Harbeck's brothers also served overseas during the First World War. 566 Private Arthur Percival Harbeck, 6th Battalion, died on 22 May 1915 in Malta, of wounds received on the Gallipoli peninsula. A third brother 2nd Lieutenant Reginald Peter Harbeck, having enlisted in 1914, returned to Australia in 1919 in the 2nd Signal Squadron.
