Memorial card portrait of 3366 Private (Pte) James Nicholas Dole, 53rd Infantry Battalion, of Bendigo, Vic. The inscription at the top of the portrait reads, "He rose responsive to his Country's call, until the day break and the shadows flee away". The portrait of Pte Dole is flanked by images of the Union Jack and the Australian Red Ensign, which was used as the national flag for civil purposes. Pte Dole, a labourer before he enlisted on 19 October 1916, embarked from Sydney on HMAT Anchises on 24 January 1917 with the 9th Reinforcements. On 11 October 1917 he was taken on strength of the 21st Machine Gun Company. He was wounded in action in Belgium on 27 October 1917, and died of his wounds on 29 October 1917.
