Studio portrait of three members of the 9th Light Horse Regiment. Identified are: (standing, left) 702 Trooper (Tpr) Hugh George Adams of Woodville, SA; (standing right) 875 Tpr William Thomas Widlake of Hyde Park, SA; and (seated) 1212 Tpr Eric Korff Smith of Yackandandah, SA. A farmer and a member of the local Rifle Club before enlisting in March 1915, Tpr Smith left Australia for Egypt with the 9th Reinforcements in September 1915. According to his Roll of Honour record filled out by his next of kin, "From early boyhood [he] was a fearless rider and was able to [do] good work [later] as a stretcher bearer for which he was awarded the MM (Military Medal)". Tpr Smith contracted Cholera and was admitted to the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance at Damascus on 8 October 1918, where he died the following day, aged 27.
