Description
Group portrait of 3826 Private (Pte) (later Lance Corporal) George Walter (Geordie) Field, 23rd Battalion, of Victoria Valley, near Dunkeld, Vic., (front row, left); and three other unidentified Australian soldiers. A farmer before enlistment, Pte Field embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Warilda on 8 February 1916 with the 9th Reinforcements. He was killed in action on 9 October 1917. While serving with 14 Platoon, D Company, he was wounded by a shell at Zonnebeke Ridge. He was attended to by a stretcher bearer, but the stretcher bearer was later reported missing. It is probable that both were killed in action by a second shell.
