Studio portrait of SX16560 Private (Pte) Francis Howchin Morter, 16th Battalion, of Wayville, SA. A compositor before enlisting in January 1942, Pte Morter served on garrison duty in Australia and served in the New Britain campaign. Later promoted to Lance Corporal (LCpl), he was one of five men killed when his patrol was ambushed by Japanese forces in the Bulus area near Jammer Bay in New Britain on 13 April 1945, aged 24.
