Studio portrait of 405008 Sergeant (Sgt) Ralph Alexander Wilson of Brisbane, Qld, a pilot in the RAAF. His first mission was piloting a Hampden bomber as part of the 1,000 bomber raid on Bremen on 26 June 1942. Transferred to No. 83 Squadron RAF, a month later, Sgt Wilson the pilot of Lancaster II, R5619 code OL-S, and his crew were lost without trace on a bombing raid to Duisburg, Germany, on 26 July 1942. Sgt Wilson was 20 years of age. The other members of crew lost in this aircraft were; Flying Officer Herbert Boyd Barber RCAF; Pilot Officer (PO) Harold Hopper Whitehead, RAF, DFM; PO Jack William Corfield RAF, DFM; Sgt Ernet Arnold Rudge, RAF; Sgt Robert Hugh Brash, RAF and Sgt John McCarten, RAF. The names of these airmen are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
