Studio portrait of 1729 Sapper (Spr) Joseph Kirkwood Graham, a telegraphist from Orroroo, SA, who joined the AIF on 6 August 1915. Spr Graham embarked on HMAT Borda with the 2nd Reinforcements to the 32nd Battalion in Adelaide bound for Egypt. He transferred to the 48th Battalion on 9 March 1916. He embarked with his unit in Alexandria on 6 June 1916 on board HMT Franconia bound for England. After a period in hospital he arrived in France on 25 October 1916 and on the 27 November 1916 he transferred to the 5th Divisional Signal Company, Australian Engineers. He was wounded in action on 12 May 1917 and died of his wounds at the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station on 13 May 1917. He was 20 years old.
