Informal outdoor portrait of 440166 Airman, later Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Thomas Walter Allen of Earlwood, NSW. An apprentice with Harbor Press before enlisting in the RAAF in September 1943, Flt Sgt Allen trained as a Wireless Operator and flew Liberator bombers with 12 Squadron RAAF based at Truscott Airbase in the Northern Territory. FSgt Allen was one of eleven crew members killed on the evening of 20 May 1945, when his Liberator bomber, serial number A72-160, crashed attempting to take off for a mine laying sortie over Balikpapan, aged 20.
