Description
Studio portrait of 4845 Private (Pte) Albert Edward Mitchell, 3rd Battalion, of Balmain, NSW, (originally of Brisbane, Qld). A boilermaker prior to enlistment, Pte Mitchell embarked with the 15th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Star of England on 8 March 1916. On 19 July 1916, having transferred firstly to the 55th Battalion, then the 59th Battalion, Pte Mitchell was killed in action at Fromelles, France, aged 23. He has no known grave and is commemorated in VC Corner, Australian Cemetery Memorial, Fromelles. His brother, 5157 Pte Roy Mitchell, enlisted in the 2nd Battalion on 30 August 1915, and died of wounds at Broonseinde, Belgium, on 4 October 1917, aged 21.
