Description
Studio portrait of 2419 Private (Pte) Philip Gardner, 51st Battalion, of Yorkrakine, WA. A British-born migrant who had emigrated to Australia in 1899, Pte Gardner worked as a farm labourer before enlisting in May 1916, and left Australia for England with the 5th Reinforcements in September 1916. After training as a signaller, Pte Gardner arrived in France for service on the Western Front in June 1917. Pte Gardner was killed by a German shell during the 51st Battalion's attack on Passchendaele Ridge on 13 October 1917, aged 24. He was buried nearby in an unmarked grave, the location of which subsequently became lost.
