Studio portrait of 199 Sergeant (Sgt) William Henry Strahan and his wife Ruth Ellen of Toodyay, WA. Prior to the First World War, Strahan had served for 15 years with the Western Australian volunteer forces, including the 18th Australian Light Horse Regiment and the Guildford Rifles. He enlisted on 8 September 1914, and embarked from Melbourne with 'A' Company, 16th Battalion aboard HMAT Ceramic on 22 December 1914. Sgt Strahan was killed in action during the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, aged 46. Sgt Strahan's son, 2895 Private Herbert Elwell Strahan, 39th Battalion, also served in the First World War.
