Description
Studio portrait of four men of the 1st Battalion. Identified in the front row, far right with cane is 917 Private (Pte) Joseph William ('Will') Brown of Coolamon, NSW. A labourer before enlisting in August 1914, Pte Brown left Australia for Egypt on board Transport Afric (A19) in October 1914, and was part of the second wave attack during the Gallipoli Landing on 25 April 1915. Wounded on three occasions on Gallipoli, Pte Brown was killed in action at Lone Pine on 10 August 1915, aged 22.
