Description
Studio portrait of 1028 Private (Pte) Harrold Francis Black, 10th Battalion of Norwood, SA. A saddler prior to enlistment on 4 September 1914, Pte Black embarked on HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 20 October 1914. He was killed in action on 25 April 1915 at the Gallipoli landing and has no known grave. The matt surrounding the photographs contains the handwritten caption, "Pray that he may return". His brother, 100 Pte Herman Black, who enlisted ten days earlier in the 3rd Light Horse Regiment, survived the war, and was discharged in early 1919.
