A saddler prior to enlistment on 4 September 1914, Pte Black embarked on HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 20 October 1914. He was killed in action on 25 April 1915 at the Gallipoli landing and has no known grave. The matt surrounding the photographs contains the handwritten caption, "Pray that he may return".
