Studio portrait of 5020 Private (Pte) George Edward Evans, 18th Battalion, of Mattong, NSW. Pte Evans, a horse-breaker before enlisting on 4 January 1916, embarked from Sydney on HMAT Kyarra (A55) with the 13th Reinforcements on 5 June 1916. On 29 September 1916 he was taken on strength of the 33rd Battalion in England. He was killed in action at Messines Ridge on 10 June 1917, at the age of 22.
