Studio portrait of 6713 Bombardier (Bdr) Joseph James Simmons, 12th Battery, 4th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) of North Fitzroy, Victoria. An engine driver in the Melbourne Tramway Company, Simmons also served with the No. 7 Battery Field Artillery, Citizens' Military Forces (CMF) for six years prior to enlistment as a Gunner (Gnr) on 7 June 1915. He embarked aboard HMAT Wiltshire (A18) on 18 November 1915, and was promoted to Bombardier on 20 May 1917. He died of wounds received in action at the Third Battle of the Somme on 9 August 1918 at the 61st casualty clearing station and is buried at Vignacourt British Cemetery.
