Identity disc : Private J Lauder, 1 Australian Light Horse Regiment AIF
Identity disc belonging to Private John Lauder with '545 / J LAUDER / C / 1ALHR / P' stamped on the front of the disc and '393 / C 1ALHR' on the reverse - though this has been scratched out.
Private John Lauder was born 25 July 1882 in Rupanyup, Victoria and enlisted for service at Guyra, NSW in September 1914 at the age of 31 years. Prior to this, Lauder worked as a farmer. He embarked from Sydney, NSW with 1 Light Horse Regiment on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT Star of Victoria. In May 1915 Lauder landed with his unit on Gallipoli and was later killed in action on the Gallipoli Penisula at Pope's Hill on 7 August 1915. Lauder was initially buried at Pope's Hill Cemetery at the base of the hill by Chaplain Ernest Northcroft Merrington. After the war the cemetery was moved and in 1923 his remains were reinterred in the Pope's Hill plot at Quinn's Post Cemetery, Gallipoli. This disc was the only personal effect returned to his mother after his death.
