Studio portrait of 2373 Private (Pte) John Bennett, 54th Battalion, of Sofala, NSW. A miner before enlisting in June 1916, Pte Bennett left Australia for England with the 5th Reinforcements in September 1916, and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in December 1916. Pte Bennett was killed in action during the Second Battle of Bullecourt on 15 May 1917, aged 24. The portrait of Pte Bennett was kept in the roof cavity of a Sydney home for 40 years before it was recently discovered and donated to the Memorial.
