Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX41976 Sergeant Maxwell Clyde Froud, 2/23 Australian Infantry Battalion, Second Australian Imperial Force, Australia and the Middle East, 1940-1942.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of letters, envelopes and newspaper clipping relating to Sergeant Froud. The letters, dated between 6 July 1940 and 18 June 1942, were written from Sergeant Froud to his cousin, Miss Patricia Froud, while he was training in Australia and on active service in the Middle East. In his letters, Sergeant Froud writes about mutual acquaintances that enlisted with him, his daily training routine, his impressions of Albury, being promoted, experiences with a particular instructor at training parade, loving the work, visiting friends, seeing French films, his impressions of Palestine, receiving Australian Comfort Fund parcels, being in hospital in Egypt with a leg injury, participating in Melbourne Cup sweeps, comments on the war, his slow recovery, and working as a Regimental Aid Post clerk. Sergeant Froud also comments on articles from Patricia’s letters.

History / Summary

Sergeant Maxwell Clyde Froud enlisted to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 27 June 1940. He undertook a period of training in New South Wales, and went on to serve with 2/23 Australian Infantry Battalion in Palestine and Egypt. Sergeant Froud sustained a leg injury in action, and spent many months recovering at 2/2 Australian General Hospital in Egypt. After his recovery, he worked as a Regimental Aid Post clerk before re-joining his unit. On 29 October 1942, Sergeant Froud was killed in action at El Alamein, Egypt. He is buried at El Alamein War Cemetary.
